Cambridge (2/3 days Hybrid Flexible Working)

Company Overview

A seasoned lawyer is sought to join a technology scale-up as General Counsel (GC). The business has undergone successful fundraising and has ambitious expansion plans, involving strategic relationships with major tech players. The GC will lead the legal function and contribute to commercial priorities, preparing the company for a future exit.

Role Overview

The CEO seeks a General Counsel to replace a Fractional GC resource, supporting the business in achieving its growth plans. In this varied role, you will develop the legal and IP approach to support commercial strategy, optimising value across the company. As General Counsel, you will own all contracts and IP, leading negotiations and building relationships with stakeholders to close key deals.

Responsibilities:

  • Developing and leading the legal strategy to promote and protect the company's matters.
  • Leading contract negotiations to close deals, building rapport with other parties.
  • Providing counsel on business and legal ramifications of commercial and strategic imperatives, including negotiation and structuring of major commercial contracts, projects, and corporate/M&A activity.
  • Managing the company's overall legal risk position by ensuring contracts reflect best practices and appropriate risk management and mitigations.
  • Contributing to the development and implementation of policies and procedures aligned with strategic objectives.
  • Leading on corporate and M&A activities, including exit preparation.
  • Line managing the head of a small patent team.
  • Developing and managing relationships with external law firms.

About You

A UK qualified lawyer with 10-15 years' PQE, combining law firm and in-house experience in a PE/VC-backed technology business, is ideal. You should have a solid grounding in corporate and commercial law. You must be comfortable being the sole lawyer, handling day-to-day work and larger strategic projects. You will need to be a highly commercial problem solver with strong communication skills.
