Job Description

As a Senior Optomechanical System Designer, you will be responsible for providing technical leadership in the design and development of mechanical and optomechanical systems for retinal imaging products.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Concept generation, analysis, and development of mechanical and optomechanical system architectures and associated innovative solutions.
  • Leading all aspects of mechanical design and verification, including input to and analysis of technical requirements and specifications.
  • Failure Mode and Effects Analyses (FMEA) and design review.
  • Peer review of designs of other R&D mechanical engineers.
  • Developing the formulation of the mechanical engineering roadmap in terms of emerging technologies for performance improvements and cost reduction.
  • Technical leadership for continuous improvement of existing product range through design analysis and innovative technology solutions.
  • Work breakdown estimates and timely delivery of design solutions for mechanical systems and modules against project requirements.
  • Communicating design intent, operational workflow, and production support for designed mechanical systems to product engineering and production staff.
  • Leadership of continuous improvement of processes used in mechanical design and development.
  • Providing customer support in a proactive manner in the form of creative solutions to problems encountered with the product.

Requirements

  • Educated to degree level in mechanical engineering, opto-mechanical engineering, or equivalent education gained through work experiences.
  • Experience in complex mechanical and opto-mechanical design in product development, including qualification activities – Minimum 10 years.
  • Strong competence and extensive experience in mechanical design using 3D CAD modelling (SolidWorks preferably).
  • Experience of ownership of delivering design solutions with significant elements of cross-functional design out with the mechanical expertise (e.g., optical, electronic).
  • Experience in leading a small team, including all aspects of people management.
  • 3+ years of experience in leading development projects in a highly regulated industry, including working in an Agile environment. Includes estimation, planning, resourcing, execution, stakeholder engagement, tracking, and delivery.
  • Thorough knowledge of opto-mechanical system design and mechanical manufacturing processes.
  • Good knowledge of DfX (Design for Manufacturing, Assembly, and Test).
  • Practical skills in assembly, test, and root-cause analysis of mechanical systems and modules.
  • Familiarity with ISO13485 and FDA Medical Device Design Control processes.
  • Estimated salary: £90,000 - £120,000 per annum depending on experience.
