Head of Plant Genetics and Research

About the Role
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced individual to lead our Plant Genetics Department as the Head of Plant Genetics. As a key member of our research team, you will be responsible for providing scientific leadership and managing a significant portfolio of research work.
Key Responsibilities
- Guiding the department and identifying grant-funded and commercial opportunities to support research and financial objectives in line with NIAB's mission.
- Overseeing a substantial portfolio of research, ensuring timely and budget-compliant delivery of projects.
- Representing NIAB at scientific and industry meetings, publishing in peer-reviewed journals, and participating in scholarly activities.
Requirements
- PhD or equivalent professional qualification/experience in a discipline relevant to plants and agriculture.
- Commercial acumen to understand the financial sustainability and operational mechanisms of the business.
- Extensive experience as an independent researcher and in management.
- Proven track record of securing high-quality funding as a Principal Investigator.
What We Offer
- Salary: from £68,878 to £78,000 per annum, depending on experience.
- 37 hours per week, Monday to Friday; part-time considered.
- Based in Cambridge or East Malling, with regular travel between sites.
- Office, laboratory, field, and glasshouse settings, varying seasonally.
- Manual handling (up to 2kg), exposure to plant materials, pathogens, insects, soil dust, and treated seeds.
- Frequent travel within the UK and occasional international travel.
