Job Title: Maintenance Engineer

At South Gloucestershire Council, we are seeking a skilled Maintenance Engineer to join our team. As a key member of our highway electrical maintenance team, you will be responsible for the design, commissioning, construction, maintenance, and asset management of traffic signals across South Gloucestershire.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Carry out periodic visual inspections of traffic signals at SGC sites, accurately recording the asset and repairing any faults as appropriate.
  • Attend, diagnose, and repair basic traffic signal faults to ensure our sites are operational, ensuring quality of repairs and work within safe working practices.
  • Contribute to site upgrade or new installation decisions, making judgements on the best action for design and specification.
  • Ensure compliance with legislation and guidance, including Safety at Streetworks and Road Works code of practice, and risk assessing and setting out sites on the live highway in line with national guidance.
  • Provide feedback for design and client functions, including specification, site trials, asset database, storage, new installations, and rechargeable works.
  • Manage financial implications of all relevant tasks and consider the cost effectiveness of repair or replacement and recharge works projects schemes.
Requirements:
  • Hold a relevant qualification, e.g. minimum of NVQ 3 or equivalent qualification, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Have a working knowledge and experience of electrical installation and maintenance of electrical units in traffic signals and have traffic signal experience.
  • Have knowledge of relevant legislation and experience of safe working practices, including H&S legislation as it relates to the operational tasks associated with highway electrical installations and the role.
  • Demonstrate confident, practical knowledge of traffic signal maintenance best practice, techniques, and working methods.
  • Be able to identify problems and recommend workable and cost-effective solutions within time and resource constraints.
  • Be confident to complete documentation, answer technical queries, and provide technical support to others, sometimes working autonomously.
  • Have proven experience of working as part of a team and experience of meeting service standards, targets, and deadlines.
