Strategic AI Risk Management Leader

We are focused on mitigating extreme risks associated with autonomous AI systems that can interact with the real world. To address this, we're advancing the state of risk modeling by incorporating insights from safety-critical and adversarial domains while developing novel techniques. Our team is empirically evaluating these risks through the development of one of the world's largest agentic evaluation suites, as well as pushing forward the science of model evaluations to better understand and predict these risks.

Role Overview

You will be heading a multi-disciplinary team consisting of scientists, engineers, and domain experts investigating various risks. Your responsibilities will include breaking down complex risk spaces and designing/developing evaluation methods. Additionally, you will research the potential for AI systems to autonomously replicate themselves across networks and study their ability to establish persistence.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage a team of exceptional individuals with diverse expertise, including researchers and engineers.
  • Grow your team at the beginning by sourcing specific individuals, often world-leading experts in their domain, and helping run the full recruitment process.
  • Provide strong management, including building relationships with team members, giving regular feedback, and coaching.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience managing research or engineering teams with a well-thought-out management philosophy and style.
  • Coaching experience and providing feedback.
  • Strong understanding of large language models (e.g., LLMs).
  • A track record of helping teams achieve exceptional results.
  • Experience working with world-class, multi-disciplinary teams (e.g., in a top-3 lab).
  • Experience working within a research team that has delivered multiple scientific breakthroughs in deep learning or related fields.
  • Strong academic background (e.g., multiple spotlight papers at top-tier conferences).

We are hiring individuals at various levels of seniority and experience within the research unit. This role offers a competitive salary package, including a pension scheme available through the Civil Service website. The estimated annual salary for this position is £80,000 - £110,000 depending on location and experience.
