The University of Bristol is seeking skilled and motivated Tool Room Machinists to join our team as Mechanical Workshop Technicians. This role offers the chance to contribute to cutting-edge projects within the Faculty of Science & Engineering.

Depending on your skills, experience, and knowledge, this position will be designated as either a Level 1 (Grade G) or Level 2 (Grade H) Specialist Technician.

  • Working with key stakeholders to provide specialist workshop services, developing concepts/plans in close collaboration.
  • Operating, servicing, maintenance and calibration of workshop equipment, including CNC and manual machine tools, hand tools and specialist equipment.
  • Diagnosing and rectifying complex problems in engineering projects and workshop tools.
  • Keeping accurate records and drawings; analysing and interpreting project requirements.
  • Training others in specialist techniques and processes where necessary.

Responsibilities:

Level 1 Technician:

  • Experience in engineering workshop practices, including milling, turning, and fitting.
  • Basic proficiency in relevant specialist software such as CAD, Autodesk Fusion, and CNC systems.
  • A passion for foundational engineering principles and a capacity for advising and supporting customers.

Level 2 Technician:

  • Extensive experience in engineering workshop practices, encompassing milling, turning, and fitting.
  • Proficient in relevant specialist software such as CAD, Autodesk Fusion, and CNC systems.
  • A commitment to providing guidance and assistance to both expert and novice customers.

About the Role:

  • Experience as a tool room machinist – milling, grinding, turning.
  • Experience in tool-making, manual machining, CNC.
  • An apprenticeship (mechanical) completed (desirable).
