As a Field Engineer / Welding Inspector, you will be responsible for performing surveillance to ensure that activities are carried out in accordance with the Contractor's Work Information. You will be part of a team responsible for delivering the Team Lead duties described in the contract and ensuring that HPC Quality needs, targets, and expectations are met.
The FE will be a staunch advocate of our Nuclear Safety Culture and will help to embed this approach in all processes and activities undertaken on the Project. The scope will cover all Works associated with the construction of the designated section of the Project, and the post-holder will perform surveillance on the activities of the Works Contractors. The FE will have to record and report findings to the Construction and Quality Team.
The role involves adhering to and suggesting enhancements and improvements to company policies, procedures, and protocols for construction, health & safety, and other functions. The Field Engineer/Welding Inspector will be responsible for the following key duties:
- Check the Works are constructed in accordance with the contract and notify the Construction Superintendent of non-conformance request requirements.
- Contribute surveillance information to support KPI indicators.
- Endeavour to identify potential Quality issues before they arise to enable mitigating actions.
- Support team instructions to take temporary measures to mitigate and keep works safe and within Quality standards. Follow up by taking appropriate and proportionate action to prevent the halt of works.
- Ensure design decisions are not taken "in the field" by EDF Energy or contractors, but are considered and approved via a formal process.
- Ensure tasks are developed to quality in accordance with the company's requirement for health, safety, and environment.
- Develop and maintain an understanding of construction drawings, construction activities, Quality Control Plans, and Quality Inspection Records.
- Ensure and monitor that Quality Inspection Records are taken and agreed before Works are covered up.
- Review Contractor performance against the authorised Quality Control Plan.
- Bachelors/Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering.
- A Welding Inspector qualification (e.g. 1 or equivalent) as well as a basic 'appreciation of NDT' qualification is strongly desirable.
- Experience in large power plant design, manufacture, and construction.
- Good working knowledge of Quality Management practices, methods, and processes.
- Knowledge of the fabrication and installation of pressure systems.
- Depending on the scope covered, experience in structural steel, welded pre-fabrication of reinforcement cages, and civil/mechanical interfaces is desirable.
- Good knowledge of pipework, tanks/vessels, steelwork, heat exchangers.
- Experience in punchlist checks and QA/QC experience.
- Broad knowledge and wide understanding of the Engineering Construction industry, materials, trades methods, and legal requirements.
- Excellent organisation, delegation, and good communication skills (knowledge of French can be an advantage).
- Proven experience of writing diaries which are accurate, concise, and with relevance to the particular form of contract.
- Able to establish appropriate working relationships with the contractors.
- Knowledge of the documentation used in safety-critical construction and fabrication environments such as Inspection and Test Plans, End of Erection Status Reports.
