About the Role

Our support for the government's strategy encompasses various facets, including:

  • Supporting the weapon programme for the nuclear deterrent
  • Contributing to the UK's counter-terrorism programme
  • Identifying nuclear tests around the world
  • Building a team of experts in nuclear science and technology

As a Physics Laboratory Technician Apprentice, you'll spend the first few weeks in our Skills Academy before moving into placements within the business.

Experimental Physics involves studying unusual materials in extreme conditions. Placements range from working with high-power lasers to diagnosing high explosives.

You'll undertake laboratory-based projects, developing a comprehensive set of skills and knowledge required for success.

Key Responsibilities
  • Preparing and setting up optical equipment
  • Assembly and metrology of complex physics experiments
  • Operating diagnostic equipment
  • Using specialist laboratory equipment
  • Checking and reporting results
  • Laboratory safety
  • Handling hazardous substances – awareness of radioactive and explosive materials
  • Quality and its application in a laboratory environment
  • Customer service skills
Requirements
  • Excellent team working skills
  • Good communication skills
  • Awareness of health and safety
  • The ability to follow instructions
  • The ability to concentrate for long periods
  • A real passion for this type of work
  • Computer literacy, particularly with MS Office (Excel, PowerBI, and PowerPoint)
