Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Biomedical Scientist to join our team at University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust. As a Specialist Biomedical Scientist in Chemical Pathology, you will play a crucial role in delivering a high-quality, patient-focused service.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct examinations of pathological samples using various technologies and report or present results as appropriate.
  • Participate in the routine work of the laboratory in accordance with laboratory procedure, ensuring efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and safety.
  • Help maintain the accreditation requirements of UKAS as appropriate.
  • Undertake specialized analytical work in designated areas of the department.
  • Participate in the department's rosters as required.
  • Take delegated responsibility for the quality control, operation, routine maintenance, and troubleshooting of equipment.
  • Assist with and, where appropriate, take responsibility for the development of new methods and the implementation of new technology.
Requirements
  • State registered BMS (HCPC registration)
  • Knowledge of instrumentation, method development, and new technologies.
  • At least 12 months UKAS accredited (ISO hospital laboratory experience covering duties explained in JD)
  • Supervisory skills
  • Demonstrates ability to organize their own work effectively
  • Experience of Microbiology as a single specialist discipline
  • At least 24 months post-registration hospital laboratory experience covering duties explained in JD in an ISO 15189 UKAS accredited laboratory
  • Training junior staff
  • Demonstrates a knowledge and awareness of Health and Safety, quality management systems, and service improvement
Working Conditions
  • The post holder will work generally in a laboratory environment and may be required to sit or stand at the bench for prolonged periods.
  • The post holder will be exposed to potentially infectious pathological samples on a daily basis with occasional exposure to other risks.
  • The laboratory provides a 24/7 diagnostic service throughout the year.
Person Specification
  • Able to work shifts to cover 24/7 working patterns
  • Able to make judgements regarding a range of facts or situations that require analysis
  • Experience of troubleshooting appropriate laboratory instrumentation
