About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Combustion Expert Engineer to join our Explosive Atmospheres Team at the Health and Safety Executive's Science and Research Centre in Buxton.

The successful candidate will contribute to a diverse range of projects within the health and safety sector, including research projects and work for commercial clients. The role involves designing, building, and delivering scientific experiments, both lab-based and outdoor, using 1:1 scale test facilities.

As part of this role, you will be expected to contribute to the team's effective running, which may include maintaining team facilities, quality systems, or health safety wellbeing matters, and taking on a role in calibrating equipment.

You will have opportunities to develop competence in areas such as DSEAR, Fluid Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Process Design (P&IDs), Process Instrumentation, Data Logging, or Combustion Physics.

The role requires problem-solving skills and the ability to expand your range of expertise in a niche area that combines practical research and theoretical knowledge.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to a range of projects that can be hazardous and complex, in a safe, scientifically robust way, following direction from colleagues and working to defined test plans, quality systems, and risk assessments.
  • Work to high professional standards in science and engineering, including constructively challenging approaches and techniques.
  • Write or contribute to high-quality, accurate scientific reports or papers suitable for submission to customers, journals, or as evidence in legal proceedings.
  • Support the presentation of technical work to expert and non-expert audiences, including travel (on occasion international).
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues and customers both verbally and via email.
  • Organise, plan, and prioritise your calendar to meet deadlines and achieve goals.
  • Work independently and as part of a team.
  • Be proactive in pursuing own continuing professional development in line with business needs.

Requirements

  • Degree-level qualification in a relevant subject, such as aeronautical engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, etc.
  • Full driving license that permits driving within the UK. However, we are willing to consider any proposals put forward by applicants without a license that would allow them to do the job by other means.
