Job Description

The role of Syndicate Accountant is a key position within the Finance department of the Chaucer Group, responsible for the accounting of insurance technical and non-technical transactions in the relevant ledgers of the syndicates. This includes handling all technical aspects affecting premium and claims, as well as operational aspects of ledger production, such as understanding the end-to-end process to trace transactions through the systems, preparation of account reconciliations, and analysis of balance sheet and profit & loss items.

Main Responsibilities
  • Accounting of insurance technical and non-technical transactions in the relevant ledgers of the syndicates
  • Handling all technical aspects affecting premium and claims
  • Operational aspects of ledger production, including understanding the end-to-end process to trace transactions through the systems
  • Preparation of account reconciliations and analysis of balance sheet and profit & loss items
  • Development of process improvements and system enhancements to ensure the efficient and accurate production of data
  • Liaising with parties involved in the process, in the Finance area, to ensure the result is delivered in the timeframe and standards required
  • Be able to deputise for the Syndicate Accounting Manager and assist in planning and production of reports to ensure that they are produced in accordance with the relevant timetables
  • Development of diagnostics and interaction with actuaries, treasury, and underwriters to develop the understanding of the financial results
  • Responsible for the following accounting activities:
    • Administration of ledgers using PeopleSoft
    • Preparation and maintenance of timetables and department resource planning
    • Handling of all technical aspects affecting the production of syndicate returns
    • Managing all operational aspects of the production of documents, to ensure the timely and accurate production of syndicate returns
Requirements
  • Relevant experience in the insurance market as an accountant or auditor
  • Experience of syndicate accounting
  • Technical skills, including working knowledge of UK GAAP FRS 103 Insurance Contracts and advanced experience of using Excel
  • Report writing skills and ability to communicate and summarise complex accounting and influence stakeholders
  • Experience with accounting software (PeopleSoft)
Education
  • Qualified accountant (Chartered or ACCA)
