Position Overview
We are looking for a qualified Senior Psychiatric Consultant to join our team at Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the care of patients within our acute inpatient unit.
The role involves providing expert medical oversight for a group of patients, ensuring that they receive comprehensive and high-quality mental health care. The post-holder will serve as the Responsible Clinician (RC) for all patients under detention.
In collaboration with designated Core Trainees, the consultant will manage all clinical responsibilities and associated administrative tasks, including compliance with mental health legislation. The consultant will work closely with the ward manager to ensure that patients receive optimal care and that the Trust's quality standards are consistently met.
Key Responsibilities
The inpatient unit comprises three general adult wards, which accommodate both voluntary and detained patients. Each ward is designed to provide a safe and supportive environment for individuals experiencing acute mental health challenges.
Our wards have a strong focus on multidisciplinary assessment and treatment, utilizing a variety of therapeutic approaches to address mental health issues. Treatment strategies include both pharmacological and psychological interventions, delivered within a secure setting.
About Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust
Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust is dedicated to providing a diverse range of healthcare services to the community. Our offerings include community health services, mental health care, and support for individuals with learning disabilities.

Responsibilities of the Role
The consultant will lead multidisciplinary meetings to review patient progress at least three times weekly, ensuring timely assessments for new admissions and regular follow-ups for all patients.
Participation in clinical governance meetings is essential to evaluate the quality of care provided on the ward, with a minimum attendance of once a month.
The consultant will also engage in business meetings to provide clinical insights on matters affecting the ward, maintaining an understanding of the directorate's priorities related to patient safety and care effectiveness.
Regular one-on-one meetings with the ward manager will be conducted to ensure effective communication and collaboration.
The consultant will oversee the appropriate allocation of medical resources to meet the needs of service users and ensure adequate supervision of trainees and junior medical staff.
