Job Purpose:

Under the direction of the Education Authority, assist with the educational support and care of pupils with special educational needs in or outside the classroom.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

The precise duties of the post will be determined by the Education Authority. The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Providing comprehensive support to pupils with special educational needs, including assisting with their educational and personal needs.
  • Developing an understanding of the specific needs of the pupils to be supported.
  • Assisting with authorised programmes, such as Education Plans and Care Plans, and participating in their evaluation.
  • Contributing to the inclusion of pupils in mainstream classrooms under the direction of the class teacher.
  • Assisting with operational difficulties and medical difficulties pertaining to pupils' disabilities.
  • Supporting the implementation of behavioural management programmes as directed.
  • Assisting pupils in moving around the school and on and off transport.

Additional Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will also be responsible for:

  • Assisting pupils to learn as effectively as possible in group situations and on their own.
  • Managing the learning environment, including clarifying and explaining instructions, ensuring pupils can use equipment and materials, and motivating and encouraging pupils as required.
  • Being aware of school policies, procedures, and confidential issues linked to home, pupil, teacher, and school work, and keeping confidences appropriately.
  • Establishing a supportive relationship with the pupils concerned.
  • Preparing and producing appropriate resources to support pupils and taking care of materials for play sessions.
  • Supervising groups of pupils or individual pupils on specified activities, including talking and listening, using ICT, and other duties as directed by the class teacher.
  • Providing continuity of adult care, including supervising play and cloakrooms, and ensuring a safe environment for pupils.
  • Reporting to the class teacher any signs or symptoms displayed by pupils that may suggest they require expert or immediate attention.

Administration:

The successful candidate will also be responsible for:

  • Assisting with classroom administration.
  • Assisting the class teacher and/or other professionals with the implementation of the system for recording pupils' progress.
  • Contributing to the maintenance of pupils' progress records.
  • Providing regular feedback about pupils to the teacher.
  • Duplicating written materials, assisting with the production of charts and displays, recording radio and television programmes, cataloguing and processing books and resources.

Other Duties:

The successful candidate will also be required to:

  • Attend relevant in-service training.
  • Assist work placement students with practical tasks.
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned by the Education Authority within the level of the post.
