We are seeking a highly skilled Physiotherapist to join our Paediatric rotational scheme. This scheme offers the opportunity to gain a broad experience in Paediatrics through yearly rotations in the following areas:

  • Acute/MSK
  • Schools Services (mainstream and special schools)

Interviews will be held face to face at Alexandra Avenue Clinic, Harrow.

Main duties of the job

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing specialist Physiotherapy services to children and young people with a variety of conditions within Harrow both in the community and acute settings.
  • Providing specialist advice, programmes, and treatment plans to others regarding the management and care of CYP with physical difficulties.
  • Supervising the work of band 5 physiotherapists, assistants, and volunteers regularly on a day-to-day basis.
Job responsibilities

Key responsibilities include:

a). Managing a specialist caseload of children with special needs including physical and learning difficulties or the acutely sick child appropriate to the specific rotation. The rotations are:

b). Preschool children (0-4) with special needs and children within primary special schools (4-12).

c). Children in Mainstream schools (aged 4-19) and secondary special schools (aged 11-19) with special needs and DCD service.

This includes:

  • Gaining appropriate consent.
  • Comprehensive assessment and diagnosis of individual children with diverse and complex presentations/multi-pathologies using a range of assessment tools (GMFM, ABC).
  • Planning, delivering, and evaluating specialist treatment programmes particularly in the area of physical disability/difficulties.
  • Carrying out risk assessments and implementing recommendations such as hoisting.
  • Referring on to other services/professionals as appropriate including other medical professionals, social services, wheelchair services.
  • Demonstrating skills in dealing with complex issues to generate appropriate strategies for caseload management.
  • Negotiating with CYP parents/carers, and others around individual case management.
  • Writing reports reflecting specialist knowledge of physical disabilities/mobility needs and providing specific advice for Education Health and Care Plans.
  • To demonstrate the ability to reflect on palpatory, manual assessment techniques and analytical skills to identify appropriate strategies to facilitate, enhance, progress, and alter treatment plans/programmes according to the child's needs.
  • To demonstrate physical ability to carry out physiotherapy assessments and interventions including manual physiotherapy and therapeutic handling, including skills in handling CYP with disabilities, splinting, and plastering.
  • To demonstrate highly developed dexterity, coordination, and palpatory senses for the assessment, diagnosis, and manual treatment of CYP, to include mobilisation and suction techniques.
  • To maintain concentration on a frequent basis in an unpredictable environment on all aspects of patient management particularly for in-depth analysis of muscle tone, strength, and movement patterns.
  • To provide specialist advice, programmes, and treatment plans to others regarding the management and care of CYP with physical difficulties.
  • To demonstrate clinical effectiveness by use of evidence-based practice and manage clinical risk within defined caseload.
  • To assess, recommend, and advise on suitable equipment for use in ward, home, or educational settings. Such equipment may include mobility aids, standing frames, special seating, sleep systems, trikes, and hoisting equipment as necessary to meet individual CYP therapeutic needs. This will involve providing training to support parents, children, school, and ward staff in using this equipment.
  • To demonstrate the ability to reflect on practice with peers/clinical supervisors and seek support as necessary.
  • To demonstrate the ability to target training (formal and informal) appropriately to the needs of course participants, particularly parents and school staff, and evaluate training provided, including developing multi-disciplinary training packages with colleagues from other disciplines.
  • Offer advice to physiotherapy colleagues on assessment and management of CYP with physical difficulties.
