Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide 1:1 or small group support to pupils with SEMH needs, focusing on those who present with challenging behaviour.
  • Assist in creating a nurturing, supportive, and structured learning environment, helping pupils manage their emotions and behaviour effectively.
  • Implement individualized support plans, working closely with class teachers, SENCO, and other staff to ensure that the needs of each pupil are fully met.
  • Help pupils engage positively with learning activities, fostering resilience, self-esteem, and social skills.
  • Manage and de-escalate challenging behaviour, using appropriate strategies to support pupils in regulating their emotions.
  • Collaborate in the planning and delivery of interventions and activities tailored to pupils with SEMH and behavioural needs.
  • Monitor and record pupil progress, sharing updates with teaching staff, SENCO, and parents as required.

Requirements:

  • Level 2 Teaching Assistant qualification (or equivalent).
  • Proven experience supporting pupils with SEMH needs, including managing challenging behaviour in a school setting.
  • A good understanding of strategies for working with children who are below age-related expectations.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to build strong relationships with pupils, staff, and parents.
  • Patience, empathy, and resilience, with the ability to remain calm and effective in challenging situations.
  • Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the well-being of all pupils.

Desirable:

  • Additional training or experience in behaviour management, SEMH interventions, or SEND.
  • Experience working with pupils on the SEND register, particularly those with complex needs.
