Job Summary

We are hiring Graduate Quantity Surveyors to work closely with our commercial managers. This is an exciting opportunity for graduates to join an established Contractor. As a Graduate QS, your role is to support the business and particularly the Commercial Team through the provision of high-quality commercial support on projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the preparation and management of subcontract and material procurement schedules.
  • Drafting of simple subcontracts
  • Assist in preparing cash flow forecasts & improvement plans for all projects.
  • Maintain / assist in the production of the margin improvement plan on the project.
  • Identify key project risks and opportunities; complete and update the project risk and opportunity register.
  • Preparation of internal commercial and other reports as required.
  • Use of cost allocation/coding which satisfies both internal and external requirements.
  • Preparation and maintenance of a robust cost to complete/ bottom-up forecast.
  • Preparation of Cost Reports to the Client with contractually compliant supporting documentation.
  • Preparation of material for Year End Audit.
  • Administration of subcontractor/supplier accounts from the preparation of detailed requisitions, monitoring, and authorisation of subcontract payments through to agreement of final accounts.
  • Undertake the contract administration, including change management and maintain associated registers.
  • Administers requirement for Main and Sub-Contract guarantees, warranties, insurances, and bonds.
  • Utilises knowledge and understanding of construction technology to achieve our sustainability, inclusive environments, and life cycle costing aims on a project.
  • Preparation of Valuations/Applications for Payment with full supporting documentation in accordance with the contract.
  • Preparation and negotiation of pricing complex change including programme impact.
  • Measurement of quantities in accordance with Standard Methods of Measurement
  • Draft and agree simple final accounts with Clients and Subcontractors.
  • Utilises knowledge of various types of conflict avoidance and dispute resolution processes to successfully resolve simple disputes.
  • Able to resolve Client disputes, with assistance.
  • Uses knowledge of different types of construction programmes and concept of float when drafting and reviewing programme information.
  • Understands which contracts require programmes as a contract document and ensures their inclusion where necessary.
  • Understands general project management principles, along with the requirement to plan to support the project team.
  • Establish and promotes best practice in health, safety, and environmental matters in conjunction with the SHQE department.
  • Demonstrates an awareness of HSE Policies and Procedures.
  • Complies with Murphy Document Control processes such as Project Hub and Acconex.
  • Complies with the requirements of GDPR and the Data Protection Act
  • Encourages good client & stakeholder relationships by ensuring they understand the project brief.
  • Promotes Murphy delivery model and can promote the impacts and benefits to the client.
  • Provide high quality customer service in all communications with internal and external clients.
  • Adept at using negotiating, influencing and persuading skills to achieve a beneficial outcome for the business.
  • Proficient at presenting to an audience and can prepare and present complex ideas in an appropriate format.
  • Has a thorough understanding of the different ways we communicate and is able to advise others.
  • Encourage and develop a culture of commercial awareness within the team.
  • Provide support and guidance to junior staff on commercial issues within the Project(s).
  • Able to effectively delegate tasks to ensure time and quality requirement are achieved.
  • Assist with the recruitment and staffing structure/ utilisation for direct reports.
  • Experienced in identifying diverse user needs and managing a diverse team successfully.
  • Actively involved in Business Improvement Initiatives
  • Support the various Murphy policies relating to Sustainability, Social Responsibility, and the Environment
  • Participate in, and positively promote, the Murphy Never Harm Programme
  • Undertake any reasonable duties expected of you.
