About the Job

The Chief Medical Officer is responsible for providing independent professional advice and guidance to the Welsh Government's Cabinet, Cabinet Secretaries, and supporting Cabinet Secretaries and their officials on matters relating to health strategy and improving public health outcomes. This includes working with other UK Chief Medical Officers, government departments, and key partners to share good practice and engage in the delivery of policy and planned initiatives.

The role requires strong relationships with key national and local organisations, including the General Medical Council, Royal Medical Colleges, professional bodies, public health organisations, and professional staff associations. You will also be responsible for developing medical workforce policy, ensuring quality and professional standards are set for and achieved by all doctors and healthcare professionals employed by or on behalf of the Welsh Government.

Your Responsibilities

  • Provide independent professional advice and guidance to the Welsh Government's Cabinet and senior officials
  • Work with other UK Chief Medical Officers, government departments, and key partners to deliver policy and initiatives
  • Develop and implement medical workforce policy
  • Ensure quality and professional standards are set and achieved by all doctors and healthcare professionals
  • Foster strong relationships with key national and local organisations

You will be an excellent communicator with the ability to share difficult messages with senior stakeholders.
