Job Description for Capability Manager

This is an exciting opportunity to join the National Nuclear Laboratory as a Capability Manager, where you will play a crucial role in the success of our Remote Engineering, Design and Robotics team. As a leader, you will be responsible for managing a dedicated team of experts based at our Workington Laboratory, ensuring safe and successful delivery of customer work scopes and continuous improvement of team activities.

Main Responsibilities
  • Accountability for EHSS&Q within the team, including duty of care for staff, ownership and safe operations of equipment and facilities, delivery of projects and programs, and EHSS&Q Assurance and Improvement Plans.
  • Accountability for all resources within the team, including staff leadership, performance, availability, SQEP, competency review, development, technical training, progression, and recruitment.
  • Support for the Capability Leader in all budgetary control associated with the team, measured against budget control through KPIs.
  • Accountability for all customer delivery associated with the team, including work with Account Directors and Customer Workstream Leads to engage with customers, technical excellence in customer delivery, and technical resolution.
  • Leadership accountabilities, including development of the team in line with business requirements, team strategy development, implementation, and review, quality of science and customer delivery, people performance, development, and cultural change.
Essential Criteria
  • A directly relevant science degree or an equivalent level of relevant experience.
  • Line management experience.
  • Working to high quality standards in a highly regulated environment.
  • Ability to obtain SC level security clearance.
Desirable Criteria
  • Previous experience of working in a highly regulated environment, such as nuclear or COMAH.
  • Familiarity with Engineering design practices and procedures associated with nuclear engineering projects.
  • Experience of nuclear operations and an understanding of nuclear safety and nuclear security culture.
  • Clear communication style.
  • Knowledge of CM&I regulations.
  • Experienced in SSOW and Work permissioning processes.
