Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced and skilled Consultant Anaesthetist to join our team at King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. The successful candidate will have significant involvement in the delivery of cardiac anaesthesia services, including daytime cover and participation in the cardiac consultant on-call rota. The department covers a wide range of anaesthesia specialties, and we welcome applicants with supplementary interests.

Main Duties

The post will be based mainly at the Denmark Hill site, with a proposed 10 PA Job Plan. The appointee will contribute to the development and delivery of aspects of the services, depending on their interests and experience. The postholder will be responsible for providing a service for anaesthesia, including all aspects of treatment and relevant management duties for the proper functioning of the department.

Responsibilities

1. Provide clinical supervision of junior medical staff as a shared responsibility with other consultant colleagues.

2. Responsible for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to CPD and clinical governance initiatives.

3. Contribute to departmental research interests in accordance with the Trusts R&D framework.

4. Contribute to the audit programmes, Morbidity and Mortality, clinical governance programs and learning from Deaths.

5. Take an active role in the formulation, implementation and monitoring of the departments/Divisions Business Plan.

6. Exercise professional leadership for all staff working in the specialty.

7. Work in conjunction with clinical and other professional colleagues to ensure that the productivity of staff within the specialty is maintained and their job satisfaction is enhanced.

8. Undertake Divisional management duties as agreed with the Divisional/departmental Manager/Clinical Director.

9. Be aware of, and comply with, all Trust infection prevention and control policies.

10. Prepare for and undertake the protective interventions that you are responsible for in a manner that is consistent with evidence-based practice and maintaining patient safety.

Person Specification

Qualifications

* Essential: GMC registerable medical qualification, Full Registration with GMC and completed subspecialty training programme in anaesthesia or within 6 months of completion or equivalent experience.

* Desirable: On the specialist register.

Training and Experience

* Essential: Wide experience and accredited training in most aspects of anaesthesia, including cardiothoracic surgery and capable of delivering services appropriate to a large teaching hospital.

* Desirable: Experience of delivering Anaesthesia at Consultant level and supervising junior colleagues within that capacity.

Administration

* Essential: Experience in day to day organisation of Pain and Anaesthetic services in a busy NHS Hospital.

Management and Leadership

* Essential: Experience in day to day organisation of anaesthetic services in a busy Teaching Hospital, able to demonstrate leadership capability within multi-disciplinary teams.

* Desirable: Familiarity with current structure of Health Service and conversant with recent initiatives and changes, Management course and/or qualification.

Audit

* Essential: Thorough understanding of principles of medical audit, must have undertaken and completed audit projects.

Research and Publications

* Essential: Experience of clinical research.

Teaching

* Essential: Experience of undergraduate and post-graduate teaching and exam preparation.
