Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Clinical Fellow in Paediatric Ophthalmology to join our team at Great Ormond Street Hospital. As a fellow, you will have the opportunity to gain extensive experience in paediatric ophthalmology, including assisting in complex procedures and developing your surgical skills.

The successful candidate will be responsible for arranging operating lists, performing medical clerking and admission, and seeing patients post-operatively. They will also be expected to work as part of a team, establishing and maintaining working relationships with patients, carers, and multi-disciplinary colleagues.

Main Duties

The Clinical Fellow will spend four months on each of the three clinical teams, with a mix of outpatient clinics, theatre sessions, non-clinical sessions, and ward referral sessions. They will be expected to work under pressure in a multi-disciplinary environment, prioritizing clinical needs and maintaining high standards of care.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for:
  • Assisting in complex procedures, including corneal grafting, glaucoma, infant lens implantation, and oculoplastic procedures
  • Developing their surgical skills, including paediatric cataract and strabismus surgery
  • Working as part of a team, establishing and maintaining working relationships with patients, carers, and multi-disciplinary colleagues
  • Arranging operating lists, performing medical clerking and admission, and seeing patients post-operatively
  • Participating in audit activities and contributing to the clinical audit process

Person Specification

The ideal candidate will have:
  • Primary medical qualification - MBBS or equivalent
  • Full GMC registration (obtained by designated start date)
  • MRCP, MRCPCH, MRCOphth, FRCOphth or equivalent
  • Research publications
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to organise and prioritise own workload
  • Ability to work under pressure in a multi-disciplinary environment
  • Ability to prioritise clinical needs
  • Extensive knowledge of paediatric ophthalmology
  • Able to be senior on-call for paediatric ophthalmology
  • Ability to work as part of a team or on own initiative
  • Good interpersonal skills

Experience/Knowledge

The successful candidate will have:
  • Experience of teaching and presenting
  • Experience of audit activities
  • Understanding of principles of clinical governance
  • Senior on-call for paediatric and adult ophthalmology Retinoblastoma care
  • Good clinical judgement and a high degree of surgical skills
  • Self-motivation, evidenced by self-started clinical and research work
  • Computer literacy
  • Involvement in the Clinical audit process
  • Understanding & proven ability to apply research findings in a clinical/ organisational context
  • Experience in ROP screening
  • Minimum of 100 cataracts and 10 squint surgeries as lead surgeon
  • A minimum of four years specialist training in ophthalmology in full time hospital service
