Job Title: Public Health Specialist Midwife

As a Public Health Specialist Midwife at the University Hospital of North Midlands NHS Trust, you will play a crucial role in leading the Public Health agenda within the maternity service. Your primary objective will be to support mothers-to-be in improving their health, thereby having a positive impact on the health of their unborn child.

You will be required to influence practice, policies, and strategies within the service, trust, and local health economy. This will involve collaborating with other specialist midwives to develop the most effective and efficient care pathways.

Main Responsibilities:
  • Work in partnership with service users, the multi-disciplinary team, and local stakeholders to improve and protect health and wellbeing, and improve the health of families in Staffordshire.
  • Focus on improving outcomes for women with modifiable risk factors such as smoking, obesity, and breastfeeding.
  • Develop and implement processes to secure a year-on-year increase in uptake of immunisation.
  • Support the service coordinators in writing and revising maternity guidelines pertaining to public health agendas.
  • Support the Infant Feeding Coordinator in embedding the UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative Standards within the service and preparation for UNICEF BFI Accreditation.
  • Lead conversations with women and families regarding weight management during pregnancy and refer to the appropriate service.
  • Revise and refresh the immunisation strategy and communicate with NHSE validated data as part of monthly return.
  • Plan for and be responsible for the implementation of training in relation to Maternity Public Health Issues.
  • Work collaboratively and in partnership with other healthcare professionals, offering appropriate leadership, guidance, and supervision to colleagues.
  • Assist with delivering quality improvements.
  • Take responsibility for Key Performance Indicators and report writing to demonstrate compliance with a variety of care quality indicators around the public health agenda.
Person Specification:
  • Current NMC midwifery registration.
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development.
  • Awareness of local and national policies and strategies in Public Health and Maternity.
Experience:
  • Recent experience in all areas of Maternity Services, including substantial experience of Public Health Promotion.
  • Evidence of leading or participating in an audit programme.
  • Experience of leading QI Projects.
