Job Summary: The Design Manager/Senior Design Manager will be responsible for the effective implementation of the design management system, ensuring it meets business, statutory, legal, and contractual requirements. This role will provide leadership to managers and professionals, overseeing all phases of design management, including interactions with construction, commercial, programme, procurement, and other teams.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Develop and implement delegated elements of the annual business plan, meeting deadlines and budget requirements.
  2. Lead and manage design resources for projects, ensuring effective collaboration and communication.
  3. Manage daily operations for project design resources and managers, ensuring smooth project delivery.
  4. Lead and present management review data and key performance indicators (KPIs) to project and sub-function leadership.
  5. Support business development and work-winning activities, contributing to the growth and success of the company.
  6. Lead the identification, development, and delivery of relevant training, ensuring team members have the necessary skills and knowledge.
  7. Ensure the management system is followed, and all project roles and responsibilities are adhered to.
  8. Act as the focal point for design-related matters on projects, providing expert guidance and support.
  9. Recommend and initiate changes to project delivery plans, developing new design management tools and operating processes.
  10. Support and influence procurement routes, contractual, and legal aspects of projects.
  11. Contribute to the promotion of technical excellence, supporting dialogue and communication.
  12. Collaborate with project management office (PMO) teams, ensuring coordinated deliverables and effective project management.
  13. Actively seek out knowledge and experience through company reach-back, staying up-to-date with industry trends and best practices.
  14. Actively seek understanding and utilize the centre of excellence (CoE) knowledge base, applying best practices to project delivery.
  15. Work collaboratively towards the common goal of net zero carbon transition, sharing responsibility for the proactive identification and management of associated carbon emissions and reductions during project delivery.

  • Excellent knowledge of prefabrication/build strategies.
  • Extensive multiple sector experience delivering different building types.
  • Display good negotiation skills to support the client/customer focus.
  • CPD record of continual learning/development.
  • Demonstrable building safety competence for Higher Risk Buildings.
  • Good knowledge of all design disciplines.
  • Exposure to Risk and Opportunity through Design management processes.
  • Developed understanding of Statutory and Mandatory requirements and timescales, including Higher Risk Buildings.
  • Stays up to date with key industry/professional trends.

Industry Competencies - Industry experience and/or qualifications:

  • Good knowledge of the construction and consultancy industries.
  • Building Safety legislation, Building Standards, construction contracts, professional appointments, and Health & Safety legislation.
  • Work with industry leadership, professional bodies, and affiliations (CLC, CIBSE, RICS, RIBA, ASFP).
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety Executive (HSE) rules and specific sector/market regulations.
