Job Summary

Liaison psychiatry is a sub-specialty that provides psychiatric treatment to patients attending general hospitals in the emergency department or in-patient wards.

This role focuses on the interface between physical and psychological health, prioritizing the delivery of safe, recovery-focused care to individuals at risk.

The Psychiatric Liaison Nurse will work within a multi-disciplinary team, completing initial assessments in the Emergency Department or on general wards, and collaborating with Liaison Psychiatry Consultants and the wider MDT.

The role offers opportunities for professional growth, including co-facilitating educational sessions for hospital staff and contributing to Quality Improvement projects.

As a band 5 developmental post, this role is suitable for newly qualified Band 5 nurses or those aspiring to develop into a band 6 role within 12-18 months.

With a clear development plan, the appointable candidate will have ongoing support through the SHFT preceptorship Programme, regular management supervision, training, peer support sessions, reflective practice, and daily team meetings.

Main Duties

The Psychiatric Liaison Nurse will develop key core skills and competencies for a Liaison Psychiatry nurse, demonstrating the ability to function in a Band 6 role over a 12-18 month period.

Liaison Psychiatry involves assessing and managing mental health needs related to physical problems, spanning a wide spectrum from organic psychosis to adjustment reactions and delirium.

This service aims to provide specialist advice on the management of psychological problems to acute hospital staff, prioritizing risk, location, and complexity of referrals, and coordinating resources accordingly.
