We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Consultant Biomedical Scientist to join our team at Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing clinical diagnostic reporting services, interpreting cervical cytology specimens, and providing guidance on subsequent clinical action or intervention.
About the RoleThe post holder will work directly with and as part of a team of Consultant Pathologists and Consultant Biomedical Scientists. The duties will include reporting and authorising cervical cytology samples at a clinical level, providing appropriate advice on management and follow-up of patients with normal, abnormal, and inadequate results.
Key Responsibilities- Provide clinical diagnostic reporting services based on own interpretation of cervical cytology specimens and cervical histology specimens.
- Ensure that appropriate follow-up action is taken for all women with abnormal samples.
- Work with colleagues to ensure that the quality of services provided to GPs and other sample takers meets quality standards.
- Attend cervical/colposcopy and gynaecological multi-disciplinary team (MDT) meetings.
- Assist with the mandatory audit of cervical cancers as outlined in NHSCSP Publication 28.
The ideal candidate will have a BSc in Biomedical Sciences or equivalent, be currently registered with the HPC, and hold a NHSCSP Certificate of Competence in Cervical Cytology. They will also have extensive knowledge of the principles and practice of the NHS Cervical Screening Programme, as well as in-depth knowledge of the quality requirements pertaining to Cytology Laboratories, Colposcopy Clinics, and the NHSCSP.
The successful candidate will be highly motivated, enthusiastic, and able to relate well to all levels of personnel. They will also be approachable and responsive to users and staff requirements, and have a calm and resilient disposition under pressure.
