Job Overview

As a Mental Health Liaison Nurse, you will be part of the Black Country Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust's Urgent Care services, delivering a comprehensive 24/7 Liaison Mental Health Service for the Emergency Department and related hospitals. Your purpose will be to support and assess individuals experiencing mental health problems, self-harm, or suicidal tendencies, or those in mental health crisis.

Main Duties

  • Provide evidence-based mental health and risk assessments of individuals presenting with acute mental health issues and/or who have self-harmed.
  • Respond to referrals from the Emergency Department, Acute Medical Unit, Urgent Care Centre, and wards/departments at the identified Royal Wolverhampton Trust sites within the timescales provided.
  • Undertake comprehensive biopsychosocial/risk assessments and develop care packages for patients meeting the criteria for support from local mental health services.

Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities

  • Provide evidence-based mental health and risk assessments of individuals presenting with acute mental health issues and/or who have self-harmed.
  • Respond to referrals from the Emergency Department, Acute Medical Unit, Urgent Care Centre, and wards/departments at the identified Royal Wolverhampton Trust sites within the timescales provided.
  • Ensure referral and access to other services where appropriate, e.g., Voluntary sector, community organisations, in accordance with patient needs, agreement, or best interests.
  • Utilise the full range of mental health assessment skills to reduce the likelihood of duplicate assessments.
  • Record interventions on the Black Country Healthcare electronic patient record system and RWT patient records.
  • Ensure written communication is relevant, accurate, clear, legible, and organised.

Person Specification

Knowledge and Experience Related to Liaison Services

Essential Criteria

  • Experience of working in Urgent Care services or assessment and intervention services, e.g., Crisis Service, inpatient wards, Liaison as a registered nurse.
  • Experience of completing biopsychosocial assessments.
  • Ability to risk assess and implement safety plans.
  • Ability to prioritise work.
  • Evidence of continued professional development.

Desirable Criteria

  • Previous experience of working in a liaison service.
