The Position

The Electrical Design Engineer will play a key role in the development of Mpac's next generation of automation machines. This position requires expertise in designing CE compliant systems to BS EN and BS EN standards, with a strong understanding of UL requirements.

Key Accountabilities
  • Provide a high level of electrical design output through a thorough understanding of regulatory requirements.
  • Continuously apply innovative thought to ensure the company's electrical design services offer maximum value to customers.
  • Provide a high level of commercial awareness to ensure design solutions are delivered in the most cost-effective manner and scope changes are managed in accordance with the company's standard operating procedures.
  • Ensure schedules are understood and workload is managed so that deliveries are met.
  • Ensure electrical design output is in line with the company's standard operating procedures and relevant regulatory requirements.
  • Effectively communicate project status to the Controls Systems Manager, customers, and suppliers.
  • Play a proactive role in the department's continuous improvement programme.
  • Provide the Control Systems Manager with the required information to establish a project's performance relative to its KPIs.
  • Mentor Electrical Designers to ensure the quality of the department design output.
  • Provide technical input during project design review meetings.
  • Support assembly and commissioning activities.
  • Strive to add value to customers, building partnerships based on trust, respect, and flexibility.
  • Communicate effectively at all times and provide extra service beyond expectations.
Key Responsibilities
  • Provide a high level of skill in interpreting customer and regulatory requirements to ensure electrical designs are perfectly aligned.
  • Commercially aware of the effective use of resources, scope change, and implications of choice.
  • Ensure relevant design documents are issued in line with the schedule to enable agreed deliveries to be met.
  • Ensure design quality is maintained throughout the project by verifying that output meets the company's standard operating procedures.
  • Communicate accurate project status to the Control Systems Manager, Senior Electrical Designer, customers, and suppliers to ensure they can proactively plan.
  • Contribute to the department's continuous improvement programme to ensure the business provides the highest possible value of service to customers.
  • Compile information and report to the Control Systems Manager on project performance relative to the department's KPIs.
  • Perform the role of technical support in collaboration with the Control Systems Manager during internal and external design review meetings.
  • Plan resource requirements with the Control Systems Manager to develop project milestones and maintain a status report.
  • Liaise with internal and external panel builders and electricians to ensure construction is aligned to design documents.
  • Perform verification activities to ensure as-built installations are aligned with design documents.
  • Apply technical due diligence by being process risk aware.
  • Contribute to machine commissioning activities.
  • Ensure all relevant design documents are controlled and archived in accordance with company standard operating procedures.
Knowledge & Experience
  • Experience in software design for industrial automation.
  • Experience of working in an innovative environment and providing innovative solutions.
  • Experience in evaluating technical requirements and providing viable solutions.
  • Experience in identifying and reporting long and short-term project resource requirements.
  • Generation and verification of software design documents.
  • Interpretation of customer requirements and presentation of design solutions at internal design reviews.
  • Commercial awareness of the effective use of resources, scope change, and implications of choice.
  • Applying technical due diligence, being risk aware, and performing FMEA and design studies to mitigate risk.
  • Knowledge of British and international standards relative to the design and installation of industrial automation systems.
  • Experience of conducting assessments and generating technical documents to support compliance to the Machinery Directive and other British and international standards.
  • Experience in validation procedures and application of GAMP.
Skills and Qualifications
  • Apprentice trained in electrical or mechatronic engineering.
  • HNC, HND, or BSC in a relevant engineering discipline and 3 post-graduate design experience.
  • Proficient in the use of electrical design software.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Sound interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to prioritise work within tight timescales.
Relationship and Reporting Line
  • Reports to the Control Systems Manager.
  • Working relationships with the Design team, Departmental managers, Customers, Suppliers, and Institutions.
