Sports Coach Job Description

Protocol Education is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Sports Coach to work with students who have Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) challenges.

Main Responsibilities:
  • Deliver Inclusive Sports Sessions: Plan and deliver engaging, inclusive sports sessions tailored to the needs of students with SEND and SEMH requirements.
  • Modify Activities: Modify activities to ensure that all students can participate fully, regardless of their physical, emotional, or cognitive challenges.
  • Foster a Positive Environment: Encourage a positive, team-oriented environment that promotes self-confidence, emotional well-being, and resilience in students.
  • Collaborate with Staff: Collaborate with teaching staff, SENCOs, and other support teams to align sports activities with students' Individual Education Plans (IEPs).
  • Monitor Progress: Monitor and assess student progress, offering constructive feedback and celebrating achievements.
  • Use Sport for Emotional Regulation: Use sport and physical activity to help students regulate emotions, develop social skills, and build self-esteem.
  • Develop Strong Relationships: Develop strong, trusting relationships with students, understanding their individual needs and providing emotional support through sport.
  • Safety and Well-being: Ensure all activities are carried out safely and in line with health and safety regulations.
Person Specification:
  • Qualifications: Relevant sports coaching qualifications or a degree in Physical Education or Sports Science. Additional qualifications or training related to SEND or SEMH are highly desirable.
  • Experience: Prior experience of coaching or teaching children with SEND and/or SEMH needs is preferred.
  • Skills: Ability to adapt coaching techniques to meet the diverse needs of students with physical, emotional, or behavioural challenges. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a patient and understanding approach. Knowledge of safeguarding procedures and a commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all students.
  • Personal Qualities: Empathy and understanding for students facing additional challenges. A positive, flexible, and resilient attitude. A commitment to promoting inclusion and well-being through sport.
