Job Title: Advanced Network Infrastructure Engineer

To provide specialist IT Network engineering services for the University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust (UHPNT) and IT supported organisations. Provide expert guidance to Networks Engineers, support the Network Infrastructure lead and Network Manager. Provide expert opinion on matters relating to network infrastructure, IT infrastructure strategy, and emerging network technologies. Follow the relevant policies, standards, and practices. Primarily remote working with some on-site duties.

Main Responsibilities:
  1. Lead specialist network engineer in support of the Plymouth Health Community network and telephony infrastructure, including LAN, WLAN & WAN, computer network security, firewalls, encryption, and authentication.
  2. Manage the Trust's Comms Rooms, ensuring access security, environment issues, panel patching standards, network space allocation, tidiness, and disposal of redundant equipment.
  3. Analyse, investigate, and resolve highly complex queries, problems, and users' requirements of the network infrastructure, liaising with Corporate Systems, Systems Operations, and End User Compute professionals.
  4. Introduce, adapt, test, improve, repair, and maintain network infrastructure equipment, ensuring operating system and software/firmware are at the correct revision level.
  5. Configure networking equipment, ensuring appropriate access control and management of secure systems.
  6. Ensure maximum availability of the network, including Disaster Recovery planning and implementation, involving out-of-hours work where necessary.
  7. Provide specialist advice, implement, enforce, monitor, report incidents, and assist in investigating breaches of IT security policies.
  8. Develop and redesign the team's working practices, procedures, and documentation, ensuring a quality-first approach.
  9. Monitor network performance and availability.
  10. Assist in managing the networks licensing position.
Person Specification:

Knowledge & Experience:

  1. In-depth proven knowledge and demonstrable experience of specialist networking technologies, including IP addressing, Ethernet switching, and network routing, across Local Area Network and Wide Area Network environments.
  2. In-depth proven knowledge of enterprise wireless networking, demonstrable experience in network troubleshooting techniques using specialised tools, and proven knowledge and demonstrable experience of cabling technologies.
  3. In-depth proven knowledge and demonstrable experience of specialist voice networking technologies, including IP Telephony, Analogue telephone systems, and Convergence.

Desirable:

  1. Awareness of up-to-date NHS Programme for IT and other national directives.
  2. Ability to plan and implement IT projects in conjunction with IT and non-IT staff.

Qualifications:

  1. Educated to an IT or Technical Master's degree level or Cisco Certified Networking Professional (CCNP) or equivalent demonstrable experience.
  2. Graduate calibre professional with demonstrable experience supporting and managing enterprise-scale computer and telephone network infrastructures.
  3. Ability to work effectively with critical network and system failures.
  4. Installations can involve physical effort, lifting, and moving heavy and expensive IT equipment and working in non-office environments.
