Data Privacy Advisor Role at The Francis Crick Institute

The Francis Crick Institute is a world-leading biomedical research institute, and we are currently seeking an experienced Data Privacy Advisor to join our Legal and Governance team. This is a key role in helping the Crick deliver its scientific mission in compliance with legal, charitable, and regulatory requirements.

About the Team

The Legal and Governance team is a full-service function responsible for legal, contractual, regulatory, data protection, and company secretarial matters. We provide commercial legal advice and transactional support for all parts of the Crick, oversee data privacy compliance jointly with the Information Technology team, and provide a full secretariat service to the boards and committees of the Crick and its subsidiaries.

Key Responsibilities

As a Data Privacy Advisor, you will be responsible for leading on the delivery of the Crick's data protection compliance roadmap, maintaining the Crick's privacy framework, updating processes, and monitoring compliance. You will also co-chair the Data Privacy, Architecture, and Cybersecurity meetings with the Deputy Chief Information Security Officer and work with key stakeholders to ensure continued embedding of data privacy considerations and increased expertise.

You will maintain data privacy policies, processes, and procedures in line with applicable legislation and the Crick's needs, develop and promote ongoing learning and awareness of data privacy and other compliance topics, and produce management information for relevant boards and committees. You will be the key contact for data protection enquiries from across the Crick and provide advice and expertise on data privacy, including DPA 2018, UK GDPR, PECR, FOI requests, privacy by design and by default, DPIAs, data incident investigation, and DSAR management.

Requirements

We are looking for a data privacy expert with around 2-5 years' experience in this area. You may also be a qualified lawyer with a similar level of knowledge and expertise. You will have experience of supporting data protection compliance in practice, including DSARs, DPIAs, data security, and breach management. You will be able to think strategically, plan and deliver projects, assess complex scenarios to give high-quality advice, and identify pragmatic solutions. You will have a strong commitment to organisational effectiveness, be able to handle a varied workload, and have good interpersonal skills, including tact, integrity, confidentiality, patience, and the ability to build personal credibility quickly and develop and maintain effective relationships.
