Truro, Cornwall, United Kingdom NHS Full time
Main Job Duties

This position involves handling a 50% commitment to pain and 50% to anaesthesia, with input into the emergency general anaesthetic rota's. The role requires maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of acute and chronic pain, as well as anaesthesia. The successful candidate will be responsible for sharing with colleagues the responsibility for the day-to-day management of the Pain and Anaesthetic departments, teaching, and training of junior staff and medical students where applicable, and ensuring active participation in continuing medical education (CME). Additionally, the consultant will be involved in quality improvement, data analysis, and information presentation, and service development as appropriate.

The Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust (RCHT) is the main provider of acute and specialist care services in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. As a teaching hospital, RCHT partners with the University of Exeter Medical School, University of Plymouth School of Nursing and Midwifery, and Peninsula Dental School. The Knowledge Spa on the Royal Cornwall Hospital site serves as the base for medical and nursing education, as well as ongoing education for health professions in clinical and non-clinical roles.

As a key member of the team, the consultant will be expected to participate in quality improvement initiatives, contribute to data analysis and information presentation, and engage in service development. This role requires a strong commitment to maintaining the highest clinical standards and ensuring the delivery of high-quality patient care.

This job is a new consultant post, and as such, the successful candidate will be expected to take on a significant leadership role within the department. The role offers a comprehensive pain management service across Cornwall, providing outpatient services to St Austell and Penzance, as well as RCHT itself. The busy acute and chronic pain service offers both inpatient and outpatient care, with strong links to the palliative care services within Cornwall to provide a community-based intrathecal pain service as required.
