Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Senior Risk Management Executive to join our EMEA Operations team at Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation - SMBC Group.


  • The ideal candidate will have a strong background in risk management, with experience in identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks within financial institutions.
  • A key responsibility will be to support the co-Head of EMEA Operations / co-General Manager of OPPD in meeting their obligations as SMF24 for SMBC Bank International.
  • The role will also involve driving enhancements in risk management and control design and execution across EMEA Operations, as well as implementing the new Non-Financial Risk Framework.
  • You will partner with and support other risk and control teams in developing and driving common agendas, while supporting the 2nd Line of Defence in developing and implementing risk policy and risk frameworks.
  • In addition, you will work closely with Internal Audit to support their work and engage with external parties as needed.

Main Responsibilities


  • You will oversee and support risk owners, control owners, and other relevant senior management within EMEA Operations to ensure all risks are identified, assessed, and managed, and the control environment is robust, comprehensive, and effective.
  • Your focus will be on ensuring robust and comprehensive governance of risk and controls within EMEA Operations, including implementing the 1LoD risk governance framework and providing insightful data and analysis.
  • You will provide independent and insightful analysis of the risk and control environment within EMEA Operations, including identifying trends and thematic weaknesses that require addressing.
  • This will involve performing deep dive "Risk Reviews" to assess how robustly and comprehensively risks are mitigated and/or investigating potential weaknesses in the control framework.
  • Once weaknesses are identified, you will drive remediation efforts, including issues identified by Risk Reviews or Audit findings.
  • Additionally, you will assess the operating effectiveness of controls through control testing and evaluate the effectiveness of risk identification and mitigation through thematic risk reviews.
  • You will also support initiatives to assess and enhance the risk culture within EMEA Operations.
  • In partnership with 2LoD, you will assist in the development and implementation of risk policy and risk frameworks and execute their responsibilities to provide oversight of the 1LoD.

Requirements


  • You must have experience in a senior leadership role (Executive Director or equivalent) in a risk management and/or control office function within a major financial institution.
  • A highly numerate individual with a strong analytical skill set is essential, along with broad industry knowledge encompassing Operations and/or COO functions gained at major global financial institutions.
  • Detailed knowledge of Non-Financial Risks and experience of designing and operating control frameworks to mitigate these risks are also required.

Estimated Salary: £120,000 - £150,000 per annum
