Central London, United Kingdom Security Service MI5 Full time

Protect the UK from serious threats and enhance national security as a Cyber Collections team member at MI5.

About Us

MI5 is responsible for safeguarding the country from terrorism and state-backed threats, using intelligence gathering, analysis, and assessment to identify and disrupt these dangers. Our protective security arm advises government, businesses, and other organizations on how to protect themselves. Join our mission to make a real difference in UK national security.

The Role

We are seeking an experienced Security Researcher with a deep understanding of computer internals and networking fundamentals to join our Cyber Collections team. As a key member, you will develop capabilities to collect cyber intelligence from critical devices, helping to advance our intelligence investigations and tackle serious threats. You will focus on a particular technology area, working to ensure we can continue our important work despite any threat.

Your responsibilities will include searching for vulnerabilities within target operating systems and applications, developing exploits to leverage these vulnerabilities, researching novel techniques to avoid detection, and assisting with the development of our on-device collection capabilities. Ongoing development is crucial to this role, and continuous learning is highly valued.

About You

To succeed in this challenging role, you must have extensive knowledge of specific operating system internals (e.g., Windows, Linux, Android, iOS, or MacOS) and be comfortable working in a team environment. You should also possess sound problem-solving skills, ability to manage uncertainty and risk, and proficient programming skills in low-level systems programming languages (e.g., C/C++, Rust, etc.) and higher-level application languages (e.g., Python, Java, etc.).

Training and Development

At MI5, we recognize the importance of ongoing learning and development for our security research colleagues. We invest in your skills through internal and external courses that support your growth, encouraging you to expand your understanding of technologies outside of your immediate work area. Additionally, you will have opportunities to attend workshops and conferences with our international partners to further your training and development.

Benefits

This role comes with a competitive starting salary of £48,928, which may increase to between £57,362 and £61,732 based on your skills and experience. You will also enjoy 25 days annual leave (rising to 30 after 5 years' service), public and privilege holidays, employee performance scheme recognition, personal learning budget, interest-free season ticket loan, excellent pension scheme, cycle to work scheme, and access to facilities such as a gym, restaurant, and on-site coffee bars (at some locations).

We are committed to equal opportunities and welcome applications from diverse backgrounds, ages, ethnicities, gender identities, sexual orientations, disabilities, or neurodivergent conditions. This includes under-represented groups like women, ethnic minorities, people with disabilities, and those from low socio-economic backgrounds.
