About the Role

Network Rail is seeking an experienced Ecologist to join their team in the Maintenance Delivery Unit on the Western Route. The successful candidate will provide ecological support and work alongside lineside and drainage maintenance teams. As an Ecological Clerk of Works, the Ecologist will supervise works and ensure compliance with environmental regulations.

Key Responsibilities

Conduct extended phase 1 habitat surveys and provide supervision of works as an Ecological Clerk of Works.

Collaborate with the lineside and drainage maintenance teams to ensure ecological considerations are integrated into their work.

Develop and implement ecological strategies to support Network Rail's National Environment and Sustainability Strategy.

Conduct protected species surveys and provide reports on findings.

Work with the team to develop and maintain ecological knowledge and best practices.

Requirements

4 years of experience in ecology, preferably with 2 years of experience as an Ecological Clerk of Works or project ecologist.

Relevant undergraduate degree in Ecology, Zoology, Biological Sciences, or other relevant Environmental Sciences.

Strong understanding of UK and European wildlife legislation and experience in applying best practice guidance.

Ability to complete protected species surveys and write reports on findings.

Full UK driving licence and ability to travel for site visits.

Desirable

Relevant Master's degree in Ecology or other relevant discipline.

Protected species survey licences, e.g. dormice, bats, great crested newts.

Knowledge of operational railway environment and PTS qualified.

Membership of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM).

Competent with Microsoft Office and GIS.
