Senior Backend Engineer Position Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Backend Engineer to join our team at DPS Games in Guildford. As a key member of our engineering team, you will design and build scalable and robust systems that enable and support our new free-to-play game in Unreal Engine.

The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with designing and developing microservice architectures, proficiency in Kotlin, including familiarity with Spring Boot and/or its alternatives, as well as good understanding of RDBMS and NoSQL databases.

You will work closely with game developers, DevOps engineers, and producers to deliver high-quality backend systems. We offer a competitive salary package, estimated to be around £80,000 per annum, based on industry standards and location.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Design and build scalable and robust backend systems that support our game
  • Gather and analyze requirements together with other stakeholders
  • Lead and mentor junior colleagues
  • Work together with game developers, DevOps engineers, and producers
Requirements:
  • Hands-on experience of designing and developing microservice architectures to produce scalable, maintainable backend systems
  • Kotlin proficiency, including familiarity with Spring Boot and/or its alternatives
  • Good understanding of RDBMS and NoSQL databases
  • Experience with real-time communication protocols (WebSockets, gRPC, etc.) and message queues (Kafka, RabbitMQ, etc.)
  • Experience with test-driven development with a high level of quality
  • Experience of developing game backend architectures (state management, real-time player interactions, high load); systems that support matchmaking, leaderboards, and in-game economies, etc.
  • Independent, analytical, and a high level of ownership
  • Successfully delivered highly scalable systems into production
  • Strong communication skills in English
