Working for Our Organisation

Under the leadership of our Chair Jacqui Smith and Matthew Trainer, our Chief Executive, we provide care for the residents of three of the most diverse London boroughs. More than half of our 7,500-strong workforce are from black, Asian, and minority ethnic groups and most live in Barking and Dagenham, Havering, and Redbridge. We also provide healthcare services to people in south-west Essex and specialist neurosciences services to the whole of the county.

Our services include all the major specialties of large acute hospitals, operating from two main sites - King George Hospital in Goodmayes and Queen's Hospital in Romford. We also provide outpatient services at Brentwood Community Hospital, Barking Hospital, Loxford Polyclinic, and Harold Wood Polyclinic. We have two of the busiest emergency departments in London.

We know we have more work to do to improve waiting times for urgent and emergency care, and our performance against the four-hour emergency access standard remains challenged, in comparison to many other London trusts.

We are particularly proud of our regional Neurosciences Centre; Radiotherapy Centre; Hyper Acute Stroke Unit; and dedicated breast care service at King George Hospital. We're also pleased to be part of the NEL Cancer Alliance.

Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities

We are excited to be advertising Senior Clinical Fellow posts, based on our Geriatric wards at BHRUT. The posts offer excellent experience in all aspects of acute General and Care of the Elderly Medicine. The Trust is a leading partner in a whole system Frailty pathway and is seeking to appoint doctors who are considering a career in Elderly Care and Frailty.

Our aim is to provide excellent care for frail older patients from community to hospital and back home. We aim to treat acute illness appropriately, to enhance quality of life, to reduce disability, recognise when life is nearing its end, and to provide individualised person-centred care in the right place at the right time.

The post holder will work closely with the medical and nursing teams on all the wards as well as other departments. He/she will attend daily consultant-led ward round, maintain overview of all ward patients, and actively participate in facilitating the discharges on the ward. There will also be participation in outpatient clinics, teaching, and training and audit/data collection. In this role, the post holder will be expected to support and supervise junior doctors on the ward.

Post-holders in this grade will also participate in the middle-grade rota on-call. Duties within Medical on-call will cover the whole range of clinical responsibility for adults with emergency problems from minor injuries to major trauma, and minor illnesses through to the critically unwell. You will be expected to lead major cases in our resuscitation room. You will also be responsible for any patients you admit to our assessment units.
