Job Summary

We are seeking an Environmental Sustainability Specialist to join our team at Assystem. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing informed environmental advice to ensure long-term environmental goals are met.

The role will involve arranging and undertaking relevant site surveys, developing plans to maximise the environmental potential of our projects, and supporting environmental permit, licence, and consent applications.

The Environmental Sustainability Specialist will also be responsible for producing reports and coordinating data to support the achievement of Defence Related Environmental Assessment Methodology (DREAM) goals.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing informed environmental advice to ensure long-term environmental goals are met
  • Arranging and undertaking relevant site surveys and developing plans to maximise the environmental potential of our projects
  • Supporting environmental permit, licence, and consent applications
  • Producing reports and coordinating data to support the achievement of DREAM goals
  • Overseeing the management of contractual aspects to ensure environmental requirements are captured and the management of contractors who perform environmental activities
  • Developing, managing, and maintaining effective Environmental Management plans, including objectives and targets
  • Monitoring the consumption of electricity, water, and waste through recording and analysis of data and reporting the impact of changes, either from suppliers or following project improvements
  • Ensuring oil spills are managed in line with the Oil Spill Response Plan
  • Monitoring and ensuring compliance with all environmental compliance obligations, including planning conditions, MMO licence conditions, and permit conditions
  • Responding to emergency incidents and supporting where required
  • Reviewing and accepting contract Environmental Management plans
  • Conducting and reporting on Environmental Audits
  • Identifying and analysing environmental impacts and contributing to the identification and evaluation of risk reduction measures, ensuring that these are adequately documented and managed
  • Training staff at all levels on environmental issues and responsibilities
  • Raising awareness of best practice with all site personnel and ensuring that equipment, processes, training, signage is appropriate for safe and correct disposal of waste, aiming to increase site-wide recycling and decrease quantity of waste produced
  • Conducting environmental incident investigations and reporting findings
  • Working with colleagues at all levels to ensure compliance with relevant UK and EU legislation and regulations and MOD requirements
  • Liaising with relevant bodies such as local authorities, public bodies, and competent bodies
  • Delivery of Environmental campaigns based upon learning from experience and industry best practice
Requirements

The successful candidate will have a Bachelor's Degree in environmental management, waste, chemistry, or a relevant management discipline, and relevant professional accreditation (MCIWEM, PIEMA, or equivalent).

They will also have a minimum of 5 years' experience in Defence and the Construction sector, experience of implementing DREAM, and experience of working with marine regulation, permitting, and consents.

Additionally, the candidate will have experience of working in Scotland with Scottish Environmental regulation, experience in contractor procurement, and must hold, or be eligible for, SC clearance.

Core competencies include excellent written and verbal communication, resourcefulness, analytical and critical thinking, problem-solving, good IT skills, and excellent time management.

The role is based in Glasgow, Scotland, and can be home/home office based with weekly visits to Glasgow/HMNB Clyde - around 8 days/month. Part-time roles will be considered.
