About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Software Engineer III to join our Site Reliability Engineering & Application Support (SRE & AS) team at American Express. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for designing, building, and maintaining cloud-native applications that meet the needs of our customers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop scalable, secure, and highly available cloud-native applications using a range of technologies including Kubernetes, Prometheus, Consul, and Vault.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify and prioritize technical requirements and develop solutions that meet business needs.
  • Participate in code reviews, pair programming, and other activities to ensure high-quality code and adherence to best practices.
  • Provide operational support for our cloud infrastructure, including monitoring, alerting, and capacity planning.
  • Build and maintain recovery tooling to ensure enterprise standards and frameworks are met.
  • Ensure application data flows are accurate and up-to-date, and drive reliability through testing and knowledge sharing.
  • Facilitate the resolution of non-application issues, including 3rd party upstream issues, infrastructure issues, storage, database, network, and file transfer issues.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent work experience.
  • 2+ years of experience coding with Java, Python, Node, or a similar language, with a strong desire to learn new languages. Experience with ML is a plus.
  • Excellent coding and scripting skills, including Terraform/Ansible, and knowledge of CICD tools (Jenkins, Gitlab, and Artifactory).
  • Experience with monitoring/alerting/logging solutions (Splunk, Datadog, AWS, GCP Stackdriver, etc.) and databases (Couchbase, PostgreSQL).
  • Experience in a public cloud environment, with hands-on experience with Kubernetes and designing/building cloud-native applications.
  • High degree of technical knowledge, ranging across several technologies, including platform enablers and infrastructure platforms.
  • Hands-on experience in building and enhancing distributed micro-service systems, with experience with ServiceMesh products (Istio) a plus.
  • Awareness of the challenges of distributed systems and practices of building highly available platforms.
  • An affinity to connect with openness and transparency, and a passion to learn new technologies and optimize them to their potential.
  • Good communication skills, able to explain concepts to product managers and business partners in ways that are relevant to them.
  • High levels of energy, engagement, and ownership, with a positive attitude.
  • Curiosity to learn new technologies and code them into working prototypes.
  • Excellent in communication, ability to learn fast & adaptive, with experience in a start-up a plus.
  • Attention to detail with strong thought leadership and analytical abilities.
