Power Systems Engineer Job Description

Are you a skilled electrical engineer looking for a challenging role in power systems design? We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Power Systems Engineer to join our dynamic team at one of our client's UK Power Systems hubs in London, Manchester, or Birmingham.

Our client is a leading global engineering consultancy renowned for its innovative and sustainable design solutions across various sectors, including the built environment, transportation, and energy. With a history spanning over four decades, they operate from multiple offices worldwide, delivering comprehensive engineering services that encompass structural, civil, mechanical, electrical, and environmental engineering.

As a Senior Power Systems Engineer, you will have the opportunity to work on complex, high-profile projects that play a pivotal role in shaping the pathway to a global net-zero energy strategy. Your role will involve designing medium/high voltage power systems, utilizing industry-recognized software for analysis and validation, drafting detailed technical reports, and mentoring junior team members.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Develop detailed engineering designs, calculations, and specifications using relevant technical software.
  2. Prepare detailed technical reports, specifications, drawings, schematics, and other design documents across different stages of project lifecycles.
  3. Model complex networks and perform steady-state studies (load-flow, short-circuit, protection coordination, arc flash), dynamic/transient simulations, and harmonic analysis to validate and verify designs.
  4. Define, refine, and lead the delivery of specific work packages assigned by the project lead, while coordinating input/workstreams from other disciplines as required.
  5. Communicate and collaborate professionally with stakeholders, suppliers, contractors, vendors, and clients within a multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural environment.
  6. Participate in and lead (where required) client and project meetings.
  7. Identify and develop improvements in project delivery methodologies.

Requirements:

  1. Degree in Power Systems Engineering or a related field.
  2. Experience in an Electrical Engineering role within the power systems field, preferably in consultancy or with an OEM/equipment vendor, delivering grid substation or renewable projects.
  3. Proven ability to produce design documentation such as schematic diagrams, fault and discrimination studies, specifications, and project reports.

  • Substation Secondary Design (FEED/Detailed)
  • HV Plant Design (FEED/Detailed)
Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.

Desirable Skills:

  3. Scripting knowledge in Python (or similar) is beneficial.
