Job Description:

As a Vessel Engineer with Serco Plc, you will be responsible for the operational state and maintenance of all machinery and electrical equipment on board our vessels. This includes ensuring safe and efficient operation, performing daily consultations with the Master, and maintaining compliance with relevant legislation and regulations.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Ensure safe and efficient operation of propulsion, auxiliary, and deck machinery, as well as electrical appliances and domestic installations.
  • Consult daily with the Master to achieve maximum economy while maintaining minimum efficiency.
  • Assist the Master in ensuring compliance with Oil and Environmental Pollution Prevention Legislation.
  • Become familiar with vessel construction, machinery, and operating characteristics.
  • Be responsible for overall control configuration of the vessel and its systems/equipment.
  • Keep accurate records of labour and work completed.
  • Submit figures showing bunker consumption and remaining onboard quantities.
  • Ensure Planned Maintenance and repair work are carried out with minimal disruption to the vessel's programme.
  • Carry out Company Rules and Procedures, prioritizing safety and meeting company requirements.
  • Be on standby while entering or leaving port, in confined waters, or as requested by the Master or trials programme.
  • Make navigational requests and execute orders affecting the vessel's propulsion plant promptly.
  • Regularly inspect machinery and machinery spaces to ensure awareness of condition and operational capability.
  • Personally supervise bunkering and arrange fuel/lube oil/ballast/fresh water transfers.
  • Schedule Watchkeeper to be on board during machinery operation.
  • Prepare spare gear orders, inventory lists, and ensure proper storage.
  • Keep engine room records as required by the Company.
  • Maximize machinery and equipment efficiency.
  • Ensure contractor work is satisfactory.
  • Return Company Reports and Forms timely.
  • Administer Classification Society Survey requirements.
  • Familiarize yourself with the Company Safety Management System.
  • Secure watertight compartments in engine and machinery spaces.
  • Provide/demand detailed handovers when joining/leaving a Company vessel.

  • Certificate of Competence as SMEO (minimum)
  • STCW Personal Survival Techniques (5 Year Refresher Course)
  • STCW Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (5 Year Refresher Course)
  • STCW Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (5 Year Refresher Course)
  • STCW Certificate of Proficiency in Survival Craft (5 Year Refresher Course)
  • STCW Elementary First Aid
