Job Overview

We are seeking an experienced and skilled Band 6 nurse to join our School Nursing Team as a Senior Staff Nurse. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering high-quality nursing care to children with complex health needs attending special schools in Wandsworth, Merton, and Sutton.

Main Duties of the Job

The Senior Staff Nurse will work collaboratively with other professionals, including therapists, educational staff, and Social Services, to support and empower children, young people, and their families. Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing and implementing integrated working practices to improve service delivery options and outcomes for individual children and young people.
  • Ensuring all staff within the team work to SHC and ESTH policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Working closely with education, health, and social care staff to deliver coordinated care.
  • Leading by example and maintaining a high level of professional conduct at all times.
Clinical Responsibilities

The Senior Staff Nurse will be responsible for:

  • Carrying out clinical skills, including administration of medicines and gastrostomy feeds, with confidence and competence.
  • Supporting the lead clinician for the children's continence service.
  • Performing effective assessments and planning care according to the identified health needs of individual children and young people.
Management Responsibilities/Professional Leadership

The Senior Staff Nurse will be responsible for:

  • Ensuring team compliance with service delivery according to the commissioned service specification.
  • Supporting the Team Leader and senior children's services managers to monitor the staffing budget.
  • Ensuring staff comply with their obligation to collect and record data in electronic records in a timely manner.
Education, Training, and Personal Development

The Senior Staff Nurse will be responsible for:

  • Developing and implementing local orientation, local induction programmes, and preceptorship for new employees to the team.
  • Ensuring staff participate in reflective practice to ensure effective problem-solving strategies within the team.
  • Completing verification for nursing staff undertaking their revalidation in line with NMC guidelines.
Working Relationships/Communication

The Senior Staff Nurse will be responsible for:

  • Developing and maintaining a highly professional and constructive relationship with the education team within the special needs schools.
  • Maintaining good communication with children and young people, parents, carers, staff, and other professionals at all times.
Financial Responsibility/Service Delivery

The Senior Staff Nurse will be responsible for:

  • Being responsible for the issue of children's continence products, ensuring the identified needs of the client are met while maintaining the specified budget.
Person Specification

The ideal candidate will have:

  • NMC Registered Nurse (adult, child, or learning disability) qualification.
  • Mentorship qualification or willingness to complete.
  • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development.

Desirable criteria include:

  • Specialist Practitioner Qualification.
  • Previous experience of working in a special school/community setting.
  • Previous experience of working with children and young people with severe and profound learning disabilities and complex health needs.
