Job Purpose:

The Lead Refrigeration Engineer is a key role within the refrigeration team, responsible for delivering planned and reactive maintenance services across multiple site locations. This position also involves team leadership, coaching, and technical support for a small team of refrigeration engineers.

The successful candidate will be responsible for completing the Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) schedule within agreed timescales, ensuring all necessary paperwork is completed accurately and in accordance with company procedures. They will also respond promptly to service call requests, assess job requirements, and carry out repairs as necessary.

Key responsibilities include prioritizing maintenance and repair work to achieve agreed timescales and response times, ordering spares in accordance with company procedures, and identifying non-repairable faults in plant and machinery. The successful candidate will also be responsible for ensuring compliance documentation is always completed and up to date, carrying out surveys and completing reports as required, and providing technical support for refrigeration engineers within the team.

Financial responsibilities are limited, with a focus on ensuring tasks are completed in the most efficient manner and within pre-defined budgets. Team leadership responsibility includes managing a team of refrigeration engineers, with a strong focus on coaching, technical support, and coordination of first-line people activity.

The ideal candidate will possess NVQ Level 2 and City & Guilds 2078/2079 qualifications, with NVQ Level 3, CO2, and CARE qualifications being preferred. Previous team leadership/supervisor experience and experience delivering planned and reactive refrigeration services within a multi-site retail environment are essential. Strong communication skills, basic PC literacy, and a full driving license are also required.

This role is physically demanding and may involve working at height, in confined spaces, and lifting/carrying heavy equipment. Flexibility is also a key requirement, as the role will involve working out of hours as part of a standby rota.

Key Accountabilities:

  1. Complete the Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) schedule within agreed timescales and ensure all necessary paperwork is completed accurately and in accordance with company procedures.
  2. Respond promptly and positively to service call requests from the Helpdesk and assess the requirements of the job, carrying out repairs as necessary.
  3. Ensure the client is kept fully updated on task completion status prior to leaving site.
  4. Prioritise maintenance and repair work to achieve agreed timescales and response times.
  5. Order spares in accordance with the company procedures.
  6. Identify non-repairable faults in plant and machinery and promptly advise the line manager of findings, with recommendations regarding suitable replacements.
  7. Ensure that compliance documentation is always completed and up to date.
  8. Carry out surveys and complete reports as required.
  9. Carry out minor alterations and installations within the individual's technical competence in accordance with current specifications.
  10. Provide technical support for refrigeration engineers within the team.
  11. Provide on-job coaching and training where required, e.g., toolbox talks, H&S training.
  12. Complete and document initial return to work interviews/welfare meetings.
  13. Complete probationary and check-in reviews for refrigeration engineers in the team.
  14. Support the Operations Manager in the recruitment of new refrigeration engineers.
  15. Act as first point of contact and support the Operations Manager for escalations within your allocated stores.

Financial Responsibilities:

This role has limited financial responsibility, with a focus on ensuring tasks are completed in the most efficient manner and within pre-defined budgets.

People Responsibilities:

Team leadership responsibility for the engineers in your allocated stores (c. 15 engineers).

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  1. NVQ Level 2 and City & Guilds 2078/2079 are essential.
  2. NVQ Level 3, CO2 and CARE qualifications are preferred.
  3. Previous team leadership/supervisor experience would be advantageous.
  4. Previous experience delivering planned and reactive refrigeration services within a multi-site retail environment is essential.
  5. Strong track record of working efficiently on your own and as part of a team.
  6. Excellent communication skills (both written and verbally).
  7. Basic PC literacy, with experience of a CAFM system to manage task completion.
  8. Full driving licence is essential.
  9. This role is physically demanding and may involve working at height, in confined spaces, and lifting/carrying heavy equipment.
  10. This role will involve working out of hours as part of a standby rota. Flexibility is, therefore, a key requirement of the role.
