Urban Design Specialist

Join Essex County Council's Place Services team as an Urban Design Specialist and contribute to the delivery of complex urban design services to our clients across Essex and England.

The Urban Design Specialist will advise on urban design matters, including development management and policy advice, master planning, design guides and codes, and design reviews. The role requires a qualified, experienced, and capable practitioner with good technical skills, knowledge, and client relationship, communication, and information management skills.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing effective delivery of urban design services, including development management consultations, design briefs, and design reviews.
  • Preparing design briefs for sites of limited scope and complexity.
  • Carrying out design reviews on schemes of small to medium scale and complexity.
  • Developing and evaluating Masterplans, design guides and codes for medium scale and complex schemes.
  • Collecting, analysing, and presenting data, evidence, and advice to recognised standards.

The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's degree in a relevant subject, evidence of post-qualification experience, and good evidence of continuing professional development. They will also have good awareness of wellbeing and H&S, able to produce and implement standard risk assessments, and to identify and implement safe working practices.
