Greenhouse Gas Emissions Specialist

We are seeking an experienced Greenhouse Gas Field Technician to join our team at UKCEH, a leading independent research institute. As a valued member of our team, you will contribute to scientific discovery and generate data, insights, and solutions that researchers, businesses, and governments need to solve complex environmental challenges.
Key Responsibilities- Conduct regular fieldwork to collect new data on greenhouse gas emissions, meteorological conditions, soils, and peat motion.
- Take responsibility for regular maintenance and troubleshooting of greenhouse gas flux equipment and low-cost sensor equipment.
- Be the point of contact for farmers and other landowners across the UK, liaising on the planning of fieldwork activities.
- Create a database of new field data.
- Prepare datasets for use in scientific data analysis and contribute to the analysis and publication of data papers.
- Conduct laboratory work, such as determination of bulk density, drying of plant material, loss on ignition, etc.
- A degree in a relevant subject, such as Environmental Science, Physical Science, Engineering, or Forestry, or equivalent work experience.
- A full UK driving license and willingness to travel to remote field sites all year-round.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to work independently, to deadlines, and maintain a fully documented and reproducible workflow.
- The ability to plan, coordinate, deliver, and lead fieldwork activities.
- Good team working skills, with the ability to develop effective working relationships.
- Good written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate with a wide range of audiences, including non-scientific, with a collaborative and inclusive approach.
- Experience working in remote, outdoor environments.
- Enthusiasm, drive, and passion for environmental science.
- Knowledge of ecosystems, specifically peatlands, farming practices, and/or nature-based solutions.
- Data analysis capability or willingness to develop these skills.
- Data wrangling and analysis skills in R or similar.
- Experience working with scientific equipment in the field, such as greenhouse gas analysers and chambers, soil sampling equipment, environmental sensors, data loggers, or similar.
- Experience calculating GHG fluxes from chamber data.
- Management and curation of scientific datasets.
- Openness to be considered to support our scientific research in Europe and SE Asia (2-4 weeks at a time).
