Overview

We are seeking a talented Data Scientist to join our team at Genomics England. This exciting role will involve working on a range of genome analysis and interpretation projects, with a focus on rare or complex diseases.

Job Description

As a Genomic Data Scientist, you will work as part of a multidisciplinary team to develop and execute cutting-edge projects that leverage Genomics England datasets to address research goals such as drug target identification and patient stratification.

You will contribute to the scoping and implementation of state-of-the-art methods for analysis of genomic and other omics modalities, developing and fine-tuning tools and pipelines to perform custom computational analyses, generate new data, and contribute to high-quality reports and documentation.

  • Performing Custom Computational Analyses: You will conduct genome-wide association studies, aggregate variant association testing, meta-analysis, transcriptome-wide association studies, fine-mapping, and MR on whole genome sequencing and other omics datasets.
  • Data Preparation: You will prepare data for downstream analysis by performing quality control, functional annotation, and harmonization across different datasets.
  • Research and Publication: You will research the scientific literature, identify new approaches to genome analysis, and contribute to the publication and dissemination of learnings in scientific papers, white papers, and conferences.
  • Support and Collaboration: You will provide support to internal teams and commercial clients and serve as the point of reference for genomic datasets and analytical approaches.
  • Tool Development and Improvement: You will benchmark and improve tools for processing and analysis of whole genome sequencing data.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will require:

  • Strong Programming Skills: Experience with R and Python programming languages and knowledge of statistical genetics.
  • Demonstrable Experience: Demonstrable experience in using next-generation sequencing data in human genetics and experience in one or more areas of human germline DNA analysis such as genetic association testing, population genetics, pharmacogenomics, rare disease genomics, risk score prediction, structural variation analysis, and working with complex genomic regions such as HLA/KIR.
  • Cloud Computing and Containerization: Experience with working in the cloud, building containers, and running pipelines in Nextflow.
  • Communication and Interpersonal Skills: Proven ability to communicate with stakeholders from diverse backgrounds and a clear understanding of clinical and phenotypic data management and the sensitivities surrounding patient cohort data.
  • Excellent Interpersonal Skills: Excellent interpersonal skills, keeping track of customer relationships, providing high-caliber troubleshooting, identifying unmet customer needs, and suggesting solutions to improve material or analytical approaches.
Qualifications

A PhD involving one of the following: Rare Diseases, Cancer Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Systems Biology, Statistical Genetics, or equivalent work experience is required. Additionally, you will have:
