As a Police Officer/Deputy Sheriff with the City of Birmingham, you will play a vital role in maintaining law and order, protecting life and property, and responding to emergency calls. This dynamic role requires a strong understanding of law enforcement methods, state legal codes, and the ability to exercise judgment in emergency situations.
Key Responsibilities- Conduct administrative and preparatory activities, including inspecting equipment and uniform, maintaining firearms and vehicles, and attending roll calls.
- Conduct routine patrol activities, such as patrolling high-problem areas, observing suspicious behavior, and enforcing state laws and local ordinances.
- Respond to calls for service, evaluating scenes, and notifying appropriate parties.
- Manage crime, incident, and accident scenes, ensuring safety and maintaining scene integrity.
- Investigate incidents, interviewing witnesses and compiling facts.
- Apprehend and arrest suspects, providing verbal commands and searching individuals.
- Handle hazardous situations, alerting emergency response agencies and evacuating persons.
- Enforce and regulate traffic rules, monitoring for infractions and issuing warnings and citations.
- Rend medical assistance, evaluating scenes and providing first aid.
- Deal with juveniles, placing them under investigation or custody, and notifying guardians.
- Handle disputes and conflicts, observing parties, separating them, and providing information to resolve conflicts.
- Control crowds, establishing police lines, and maintaining control using verbal commands and physical force.
- Complete reports and written documentation, forwarding them to the chain of command and appropriate parties.
- Perform court-related activities, keeping track of court dates, reviewing documentation, and presenting testimony.
- Cooperate with other agencies, submitting information and participating in joint actions.
- Interact with the public, performing community relation activities, and conducting presentations to promote public safety.
- Work as a team with other officers, informing them of scene information and coordinating actions.
- Participate in training activities, completing technical skills trainings and staying abreast of laws and policies.
- Maintain jails and inmates in custody, ensuring safety and well-being.
- Must meet all of the following AND Option A, B, or C below.
- Must have NO felony convictions.
- Must have no convictions in any court of a crime punishable by imprisonment for a term exceeding 1 year.
- Must NOT be subject to a court order that restrains the person from harassing, stalking, or threatening an intimate partner or child of such intimate partner.
- Must NOT be prohibited by state or federal law from owning, possessing, or carrying a firearm.
- Must NOT be required to register as a convicted sex offender.
- Must have an honorable discharge if served in the US Armed Forces.
- Must be a citizen of the United States.
- Must be at least 19 years of age.
- Must have a Driver's License.
- Must be in good health and physically fit for the performance of the duties of a law enforcement officer.
- Option A: Must have been previously APOSTC certified and who are required to complete the Refresher training for reinstatement of their Certification.
- Option B: Must possess an Associate's degree or higher from an accredited College or University.
- Option C: Must possess a high school diploma or GED AND take and pass the ACT WorkKeys Assessment for Law Enforcement Officers.

- Work involves use of standard office equipment, such as computers, phones, copiers, etc.
- Work may involve the use of specialized equipment such as firearms, hand-held weapons, speed detection devices, vehicle/on-person cameras, first aid equipment and materials, investigative equipment/tools, and analytical tools such as breathalyzers and drug testing kits.
- Job is primarily sedentary involving sitting for long periods, but occasionally involves moderate to heavy physical exertion required for occasional prolonged periods of lifting, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, or running.
- May involve occasional lifting of items or objects weighing up to 75 lbs.
- Work involves physical ability necessary to occasionally subdue or restrain a combative individual and exercise necessary self-defense.
