Manchester, United Kingdom International Society for Industrial Ecology Full time
Unlock the Future of Sustainable Media

We are seeking a highly motivated researcher to join our team in exploring the environmental impact of video streaming. This four-year Industrial PhD, hosted jointly by the BBC Research and Development Sustainable Engineering team and the Sustainable Computing group at the University of Bristol, offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the net zero transition of the media sector.

Broadcast and Streaming have become an integral part of human life, but their energy and environmental impacts still face significant challenges. As a member of this team, you will apply industrial ecology methods to complex scenarios, expanding their applicability and developing real-life sustainability interventions for digital devices, cloud, and internet infrastructure.

Your responsibilities will include establishing the current energy and greenhouse gas footprint from data centres, networks, and user devices, identifying hotspots for climate impact, proposing sustainable interventions, and testing their efficacy in real-world settings. You will also build comprehensive sustainability assessment models and undertake extensive data collection, sanitisation, visualisation, and pipeline development.

A strong analytical background, combined with a passion for sustainability and a drive to make a difference, is essential for this role. Ideal candidates will have interest and/or expertise in Lifecycle Assessments, Power Measurements, and/or Energy Systems modelling. Comfort with Data analytics and/or mathematical modelling is also a great asset.
