Ecological Consultant

Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced ecologist to join our team at South Oxfordshire and the Vale of White Horse District Councils. This is an exciting opportunity for a professional with a strong background in ecology to contribute to shaping the future environment of southern Oxfordshire.

The successful candidate will have professional experience working as an ecologist or environmental manager, demonstrating a sound practical knowledge in all aspects of ecology and related legislation. They will be part of a multi-disciplinary team working alongside Tree Officers, Heritage Officers, Urban Designers, and Landscape Architects.

Key Responsibilities
- Providing ecological advice to planning colleagues on small and medium-scale development proposals, negotiating with developers, and defending planning decisions at appeals.
- Practical species and habitat surveys skills, including providing specialist advice on implementing and enforcing protected species and habitats regulations.
- Assisting the council in responding to Environment Act 2021 requirements related to Biodiversity Net Gain in the planning process, maintaining effective partnerships with environmental organizations and key stakeholders.
- Contributing to corporate policies, guidance, and procedures such as Local Development Plans and Supplementary Planning Documents.

Requirements
- A degree or diploma in ecology or a related discipline, along with a minimum of three years' professional experience in an ecology-related role.
- Hold a full and current driving license and daily use of a car insured for business purposes.

While postgraduate qualifications, membership in the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM), experience with assessing planning applications, and local government experience are desirable, they are not essential.
