Job Opportunity: Development of Particle Detectors for Neutron and Muon Beamlines

Industry Placements is seeking highly motivated and talented students to join our team as Industrial Placements for the development of particle detectors for neutron and muon beamlines.

The successful candidates will contribute to the development of cutting-edge detector technologies to meet the challenging requirements posed by ISIS instruments. They will work alongside experienced detector scientists to design, construct, and experimentally determine the characteristics of prototype detectors.

The Detector Systems Group is a multi-disciplinary team of scientists developing innovative detector technologies. The successful students will be responsible for carrying out the experimental programme, with both hands-on experimental responsibilities and data analysis tasks.

The ideal candidates will have a keen interest in developing state-of-the-art instrumentation and be able to work independently and engage in self-motivated learning. They will also have good communication skills, both verbal and written, and be willing to work with ionising radiation.

The successful candidates will be awarded beam time on an ISIS instrument to evaluate the performance of their prototypes in their ultimate environment.

Essential qualifications include currently being enrolled on an undergraduate degree course and returning to university/studies to complete the undergraduate degree following the placement, being required or having requested to take an industrial placement year, having the right to live and work in the UK for the duration of the placement, and being able to commence employment in summer 2025.

Desirable qualifications include having knowledge of ionizing radiation detectors, having experience using test equipment for processing electronic signals, and demonstrating an extra-curricular interest in experimental physics.

Online applications only are preferred for this role. Assessment will only be based upon the content of the submitted covering letter and CV and not the 'experience' section of the application.
