Job Description

This is a challenging opportunity to lead and contribute to the development of our Radiology Physics Department at University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust.

Main Responsibilities
  1. Management and Target Setting: Provide day-to-day management, target setting, and supervision of junior Medical Physics staff and Health Education England trainees (STPs and PTPs).
  2. Business Planning: Contribute to the business planning process of the department, ensuring alignment with strategic objectives.
  3. Radiation Protection and Quality Assurance: Lead in the development of radiation protection and quality assurance of radiography, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and standards.
  4. Deputy RPA Role: Assist the lead RPA and act as deputy RPA when the head of Radiology Physics is unavailable, ensuring seamless continuity of services.
Key Accountabilities
  1. Equipment Commissioning: Assess the radiation protection and imaging performance aspects of new radiological imaging equipment during the commissioning process, ensuring safety and efficacy.
  2. Performance Evaluation: Evaluate the long-term performance of complex radiological imaging equipment, such as CT scanners, identifying areas for improvement.
  3. Radiographic Equipment Knowledge: Acquire and maintain knowledge of radiographic equipment and techniques across the district, ensuring optimisation of radiation dose and image quality.
  4. QC Programmes: Monitor and advise on QC programmes for various clients, ensuring adherence to regulatory requirements.
  5. Audits and DRLs: Lead regular audits of radiation doses to patients, assist in setting local Diagnostic Reference Levels (DRLs), and ensure compliance with The Ionising Radiations (Medical Exposure) Regulations.
  6. Dose Management System: Participate in utilising the Dorset dose management system (DMS) to analyse radiation doses from routine clinical radiology, driving optimisation work through multi-disciplinary teams.
  7. Incident Investigations: Lead incident investigations, advising on CQC/HSE notification requirements, and assisting in investigations where appropriate.
Person Specification
  • Qualifications: 1st or 2:1 honours degree in Physics or related subject, HCPC registration as a Clinical Scientist (Medical Physics), RPA2000 accreditation as a Medical Physics Expert (MPE) and Radiation Protection Advisor, and/or equivalent knowledge/experience.
  • Experience: Greater than 5 years' post-registration experience working in Medical Physics, detailed knowledge and experience of a specialism within radiology, and detailed knowledge and experience of radiation protection across radiology.

Estimated Salary: £60,000 - £80,000 per annum, depending on experience and qualifications.
