Job Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Senior Gastroenterology Specialist Nurse to join our team at the South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust. This is an exciting opportunity for a nurse with experience in gastroenterology to work in a challenging yet rewarding environment.

About the Role

This role involves providing specialist care to patients with liver disease, working closely with the medical team to deliver high-quality patient care. The successful candidate will be responsible for assessing, treating, counselling, and educating patients on aspects of liver disease.

As a Senior Gastroenterology Specialist Nurse, you will be required to work autonomously, making decisions about patient care and treatment plans. You will also be involved in contributing to the facilitation of care pathways, supporting the development of nursing practice, and exercising accountability as set out in the NMC Code.

Responsibilities
  • Provide clinical assessment, treatment, counselling, and education on aspects of liver disease.
  • Work alongside the Alcohol Care Team and Community Alcohol Services to offer alcohol cessation/safe reduction plans.
  • Contribute to/provide specialist education and training programmes for health care professionals and other professional groups.
  • Facilitate the planning, delivery, and evaluation of care pathways for designated patients.
  • Support the development of nursing practice within the specialist field through evidence-based practice and national standards.
  • Exercise accountability as set out in the NMC Code.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you must have:

  • Current 1st level NMC registration.
  • Degree in nursing studies or relevant clinical degree (UK equivalent).
  • Mentorship certificate/Practice Assessor training or demonstrable equivalent experience.
  • Non-medical prescribing or willingness to complete.
  • Basic knowledge of financial management.
  • Experience of care delivery.
  • Experience of coordinating care for a caseload of patients.
  • Project management.
  • Experience in implementing quality frameworks.
  • Effective presentation/report writing skills.
  • Thorough understanding of contemporary nursing issues.
Working Environment

The successful candidate will work in a busy specialist nursing team in Gastroenterology, providing specialist care to patients in a very rewarding but challenging area of healthcare. You will be supervised by the Gastroenterology Matron but will work largely autonomously due to activity on both Sunderland Royal Hospital and South Tyneside Hospital sites.

Salary: £45,753 - £57,197 per annum depending on experience.
